The OKO International Ethnographic Film Festival team has prepared a lot of surprises for this section. There are participants of world-famous film festivals, debutants in the film industry, and competitive films of previous editions.
The International Short Film Competition Program has traditionally been the largest section at our festival in terms of the number of films presented. The record was held by the first edition of 2020 with 30 films in the program slot.
This year, as we decided not to set genre restrictions, we received a huge number of submissions with unique films. The program department could hardly decide on 41 films, including 19 live-action, 14 non-fiction and 8 animated films.
In the International Short Film Competition Program OKO GLOBAL, almost all continents are represented to some extent. This applies to the place of action, the directors' personalities, the local traditions shown, as well as the countries of filming and production.
The plot mosaic introduces the viewer to a huge range of unique customs and rituals, national crafts, reflections on the past and present, mystical elements that are an integral part of the ethnographic background and cultural clashes that contribute to cultural dialogue. The audience will also be immersed in stories about the search for love, urban culture, ethnic diversity, tragic moments in history, including modern Ukraine, self-identification, festivities and gaiety, sadness and loss, gaining new things and preserving cultural memory and code.
The program department has collected a lot of films that have already been in the lineups of a number of major film festivals (Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Toronto, Sundance, etc.) and film awards winners and nominees (Oscars, European Film Awards and national cinema institutions). However, the main criterion for the selection was not the number of festivals the film attended, or awards and nominations, but the postulate: “It is a sin not to show a good film to the audience”! We also do not forget about young talents whose films, although they have a more modest festival history, are self-sufficient without additional regalia and will surely appeal to the audience and festival guests. The film festival team hopes that OKO will become a good platform for them, which will give them an important impetus for further festival path. Of course, the audience and our jury will traditionally give their verdict.
"This program was special for me, because it was my first experience in selecting films for the festival. The process was really exciting and challenging. Our program department often spent hours discussing each film, sometimes disagreeing, but also unanimously rejoicing in successful finds. I worked on the program of the Film Festival expecting to find the true diversity of this world, and that's exactly what we found. These films show how different we all are, but at the same time they demonstrate that we share common values, a reflection of the richness and unity in diversity", says Serhii Zeinalov, the programmer of the OKO Film Festival.
Denis Budanov, the program director of the OKO IEFF, adds: “I won't reveal America, but for some part of audience, the full-length format is more familiar than shorts in a block, so short film sections at festivals are less popular. However I would like to remind you that it is the short form that allows new directors to find their own cinematic language, and professionals to hone their skills. Short films have their own unique beauty.
I would also like to share some observations. For example, this year's program includes a short film by Inka Achté, the winner of the last year's International Feature Film Competition. We will also show a non-fiction short film by José Cardoso, whose feature film was screened by our festival in 2022 (looking ahead, we will show this film in retrospect). And also as a fan fact: in this competition slot found a place for films with “poopy” and “tits” in their titles. This, of course, added “spiciness” to the localization of the titles of these films into Ukrainian and Bulgarian, but believe me, they have funny titles only at first glance.
I don't want to single out one section, because each program and each film is like a dear person to me, and the directors and authors are like parents who have entrusted us with their children. I must say that this year's International Short Competition Program is a special source of pride for the OKO Film Festival 2024.”
